With a wealth of historic castles, houses and monuments, Galway East resounds to the
echoes of the past...
The village of Oranmore, just minutes from Galway City, nestles on the shores of Galway Bay. The village is dominated by a splendid 12th century castle built by the Claricarde Burkes which is now privately owned. Opposite it lies a megalithic tomb dating from approximately 2000B.C. A more recent monument, a statue of a freedom fighter, stands at the corner of the main town. Oranmore is a lively village whose pubs are renowned for their impromptu music and dance sessions.
